Southeastern Louisiana University opened its doors on September 14, 1925 in Hammond, Louisiana, which is located on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain, 55 miles north of New Orleans and 45 miles east of Baton Rouge. In its early years, it was known as Hammond Junior College and opened with just four teachers, a president and 40 students. The college became Southeastern Louisiana College in 1928 and by 1937 had become a four-year institution offering baccalaureate degrees. Southeastern began issuing graduate degrees in 1960 and was renamed Southeastern Louisiana University by legislative act in 1970.
Southeastern is home to approximately 15,500 students representing 41 states and 64 countries. The beautiful campus is nestled among ancient oaks, pines, magnolias, and camellias and includes over 50 permanent buildings, including state-of-the art residential, academic, and athletic facilities. Although the University has seen steady enrollment increases, the campus has maintained its student-oriented, family atmosphere. With a small student to faculty ratio, Southeastern students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty. Organized into six academic colleges (General Studies; Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Business; Education and Human Development; Nursing and Health Sciences; and Science and Technology), Southeastern provides its students with choices from 70 associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degree programs. Southeastern is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and all degree programs are nationally accredited.
Through its Division of Auxiliary Services, Southeastern provides various products and services to the campus community. The division is comprised of seven departments that extend the learning environment beyond the classroom and enhance the quality of campus life. The goal of the division is to provide the highest quality products and services to the Southeastern community. One of the essential Auxiliary departments is the University Post Office. Southeastern's University Post Office, located in the Student Union, provides students, faculty and staff with the information needed to process their outgoing mail in the most timely and cost effective service available. In addition, the Post Office is responsible for the distribution of all incoming USPS and Interdepartmental mail to faculty, staff and students as well as the processing of outgoing mail for all departments on campus. The University Post Office is a contract station of the Federal Post Office and, as a contract station, performs all services offered by the Federal Post Office except CODs, passports, next day express mail and the use of credit or debit cards for charges.
In 2007, Southeastern's University Post Office implemented a communications plan designed to provide up-to-date information regarding office operations, postal procedures and postal regulations. A comprehensive Web site was launched providing detailed information on new postal regulations and rates, detailed departmental mail procedures, post office box rental information, tips on selecting the best mail service, pickup and delivery times, a reference list of state abbreviations, and a complete list of frequently asked questions. In addition to the Web site, the University Post Office utilizes campus e-mail and an electronic bulletin board system to keep students, faculty and staff abreast of important University Post Office news. Please visit the Web site or call Susan Courtney, Coordinator of Postal Services, at (985) 549-2124 for additional information.
