An Overview of the Mail Services Unit
The University of Texas at Austin
University Services Department (Printing, Copy and Mail Services)

Like so many university auxiliaries, University Mail Services for The University of Texas at Austin is one of the best kept campus secrets.

Campus Mail, with Interim Supervisor Hamon Barlow and Special Services, with Interim Supervisor Rene Zapata have built a team that is committed to delivering the best services and products at the lowest possible price for their customers. Their goal is to develop the best customer service mentality within the University.

Barlow's team (Adrian Baeza, Leonard Chapman, Elbert Chiu, Sam Garcia, Kevin Hines, Paul Mankin, Brian Miller, and Craig Pellar), focuses on the collection and delivery of departmental campus mail by processing outgoing mailings relating to official university business as well as routing interagency mail.

Zapata's team (Rachel Krhovjak, Katina Paredes, and Herman Vallejo) offers full service letter shop services, fulfillment, and other communications tools to assist their customers' needs. Mail Special Services provides services which include, but are not limited to: consultation, inkjet addressing, inserting, CASS/PAVE certification, folding, tabbing, zip+4 addressing, DPV validation, postal discount optimization, metering and sealing of letters and flats, internal mail preparation and delivery, and courier service.

With a combined 127 years of experience, these team members are 13 of the most customer service-minded employees. University Services is proud to say that they have serviced 103 university buildings in 2007, delivered approximately 1.2 million pieces of campus mail, and 9,247,762 pieces of outgoing mail. The department's six vehicles traveled 29,042 miles.

In order to keep pace with the ever-changing document industry, the University Mail Services unit is a member of the National Association of College (NACUMS) and the Southwest Association of College and University Mail Services (SWACUMS). Staff BIOS

Hamon Barlow
Hamon Barlow is Interim Supervisor of Mail Services for the University of Texas at Austin, with over 24 years experience in the mail service industry. Hamon has worked as an assistant supervisor for 4 years, during which time he worked with sister unit, Mail Special Services. He is an active member of the Southwest Association of College and University Mail Services (SWACUMS), National Association of College and University Services (NACUMS), and the Austin Area Postal Customer Council (AAPCC). "I value many individuals in the mailing industry and the learning opportunities that some of the organizations and my colleagues associated with them have to offer. Currently I'm working on a Mail Quality Control Specialist (MQCS) certification."

Rene Zapata
Rene Zapata is Interim Manager for Mail Special Services for the University of Texas at Austin, where he manages letter shop services, fulfillment, and a variety of other communication projects. Rene joined the University as a part time mail clerk in May 1995, and has been promoted throughout the years. He is an active member of the Southwest Association of College and University Mail Services (SWACUMS), National Association of College and University Services (NACUMS), and the Austin Area Postal Customer Council (AAPCC).
